• All-Star Program is for sophomores who have a 1.0 to 2.0 GPA. Organizational skills from teachers are offered.

• Football playoff berth is at stake in this Friday’s game vs. Rio Mesa.

• The Senior Class is trying to have Graduation be at 6 p.m. this year. Already 30 teachers onboard, along with at least 80% of the Seniors. There was also a private vote so students wouldn’t be intimidated. Results showed only a handful still wanted 2 p.m. Graduation ceremony. As of today, we’re leaning toward 6 p.m. Still waiting for any more student/parent input.

• “Plaza” plans are still at the architectural level.

• Big money needed for technology hardware; cost is approximately $1,000 per computer.

Assistant Principal (Ron Fisher):

• Meeting tomorrow at 9 a.m. for Every 15 Minutes Program to be held May 21 & 22, 2008. Looking at about $25,000 to pull it off. Bleachers on Mission Oaks Blvd. would cost $9,000, which would be too expensive and might not be possible. Part of the grant money from the State is to supply t-shirts, which are reimbursable. Costs include housing students for the retreat part of the program (hopeful that some donations will be forthcoming), food, makeup. The cars will be donated. Next month he’ll be looking for volunteers to get involved in the program.

Fundraisers:

Jennifer Walby read a letter from herself and Keli Kimball discussing the Silent Auction Dinner Dance fundraiser. Decision made to cancel the event for this year; event is too much work, with not enough attendance or money generated. We will get full deposit refunded from Las Posas Country Club. Jennifer and Keli are happy to meet with people who want to talk about fundraising opportunities, but suggestion is to have an additional armchair fundraiser perhaps designated to a specific goal. Rochelle said we would bring the fundraising topic back up at the January PTSA meeting. There is a possibility of doing a Bingo Night. Barbara Wagner gave a brief overview of the history of Bingo at the high school. A fundraising opportunity flyer was handed out regarding online driver’s education courses. The school would get $25 per student signing up plus the student would get a $25 discount for the program. Jennifer Walby moved that PTSA implement the Online Driver Education fundraiser. Motion carried. We will discuss a potential Roxy Theater fundraiser at the January PTSA meeting.

Grade Representatives: Barbara Wagner said the Class of 2008 has $420.37 in the bank. They owe ASB $2,400 for deposit for the Prom Site. Her advice to Freshman parents — raise the money now, don’t wait until they’re Seniors!

• Cyber Safety class for parents November 6.

• Drug trends: Marijuana, prescription meds (Xanax, Adderall, Vicodin, etc.). Suggestion to parents to lock up the pills or at least monitor them at home. Mr. Lipman pointed out that the first offense with prescription meds is the same as with marijuana, and some of the prescription drug possessions can be considered a felony.

• Vandalism incident last Saturday when two students came on campus and did $10,000-plus in damage with golf carts. All were arrested. The recommended punishment for the offenders will be 5-day suspension, police arrest, and a recommended 2-semester expulsion from the District.

The Straight Up program shows parents what’s really going on at parties … shocking and enlightening. A law enforcement panel will be available after the Straight Up presentation for Q & A.

In March, the “Every 15 Minutes” program will take place. The State will reimburse us with grant money. If not, we will need to put up the money, totaling up to $9,999.  Only food would not be reimbursable with the grant money, but PTSA could handle the hospitality end of it. [Patti gave an overview of the “Every 15 Minutes” program that depicts, graphically, how every 15 minutes someone is killed as a result of an alcohol-related car crash.]

Patti Ball moved PTSA be the contractor of record with the Office of Traffic Safety for 2008 in order to receive the State grant. Lori Colby asked if we were assured getting the grant money. • Students having issues with their lockers need to go to the office. There is some flexibility with the lockers.

• Camarillo High School’s API went from 794 to 789. We had two 30-point jumps in the two previous years so feeling is we’ve reached a plateau. We now need to work on helping the sub-groups (Hispanic, socio-economically challenged, and ELL), as well as working with the underachieving students. Still try to break 800 by helping students one at a time. Bright spot was that the Special Education sub-group saw their scores rise by 15 points. There are three proven strategies we’re going to implement — learning objective, feedback, and academic vocabulary.

• It’s great to see all the involved PTSA parents at the meeting. It’s very appreciated! To that end, don’t forget that the Executive Board officers get preferred parking/seating at Graduation.

Permission slips will be sent home prior to the event. For parents on Oct. 23, Straight Up Ventura County will be on campus in The Little Theater. The Straight Up Ventura County group will also offer an off-site program on Sept. 15 relating to teen parties.

In March 2008, ACHS will have an “Every 15 Minutes” program, profiling the statistics that every 15 minutes a teenager is killed in an alcohol-related accident.
